The Letter

Dear President Samuel “Dub” Oliver,

As former students, alumni, and current students of Union University, we want to thank you, along with Dr. C. Ben Mitchell, Dr. Nathan Finn, and Dr. Hunter Baker, for representing us at The Nashville Statement Meeting. We understand that doing so has already brought social cost and that more will likely follow. As Christ told His disciples: “If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” Yet we are sent into the world as vessels of Christ’s grace and deliverance from the power of sin and death.

We commend you for your courage of conviction even at the risk of personal detriment or loss. We encourage you that many in the Union alumni community and current student body are thankful for your bold leadership and example. Setting aside differences over the wording or timing of the Nashville Statement, we sign our names below that we might be counted with you in your commitment to the supremacy of God and His Word above our own personal desires, for we know that Christ is better than all the pleasures this life affords.

We, the undersigned, thank you for refusing to stay silent on these issues. We owe much to our alma mater and all those who taught us there. Following the example set by you and so many others at Union, we commit to sincerely love our friends and family in the LGBT community, while not cowering from our commitment to Christ and His commands. We commit to “strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.” We know that we will be imperfect in our love, but empowered by the author and perfecter of our faith we will do all by His power to love our neighbor as Christ loved us.

Sincerely,

Alumni and Students of Union University
